This is a string quartet + voice arrangement that takes a poem by Emily Dickinson and sets it to the music of a fiddle reel, "Far From Home." In the poem, "I taste a liquor never brewed," the narrator recounts being intoxicated by the beauty of nature, far stronger than any alcohol could ever do.

Originally written for harp, Captain O'Kane was written by the blind harpist and composer Turlough O'Carolan in honour of his friend and war hero of the same name. Arranged here for violin, viola, and cello, I have included an original melody to introduce the main theme. This is a melancholic piece, but hopefully one that performers and listeners will find interesting.
